As markets change, terminology changes, too. The MidMarketer world is filled with expressions and acronyms packed with opportunity…and sometimes confusion. When you need to understand “what they’re talking about,” check out the MidMarketer glossary. You’ll not only get the definition, but a MidMarketer editorial aiming you in the right direction, or at least giving you our opinion on the subject.
Double Opt-In
An email subscription practice in which marketers ask new email subscribers to confirm (usually via email) that they do indeed want to be added to an email distribution list before the subscriber actually begins receiving any information. For Example: You sign up for a newsletter on an interesting Web site. Immediately you get an email from the site asking you to confirm that you really did sign up. You confirm - usually by clicking on a link in the email message. You're done - you just double-opted in, once when you signed up on the web site, and twice when you confirmed.
The double opt-in confirmation is the best guarantee of user interest and provides for a very clean list, but typically shows less growth than a single opt-in list.
