As markets change, terminology changes, too. The MidMarketer world is filled with expressions and acronyms packed with opportunity…and sometimes confusion. When you need to understand “what they’re talking about,” check out the MidMarketer glossary. You’ll not only get the definition, but a MidMarketer editorial aiming you in the right direction, or at least giving you our opinion on the subject.
Opt-in
A specific request to subscribe to a mailing list or to receive information or advertising. (Double Op-In means the person requesting information must confirm their desire to receive it by responding to an email message after subscribing.)
Email marketing best practices dictate that that the process of opting-in should be obvious and direct. Some marketers make the opt-in a hidden (fine print on a linked page) automatic result of requesting information. This is shady at best and will only result in spam complaints that could threaten your brand and ability to market via email. Make sure the potential subscriber clearly understands that they are opting-in and what they will be receiving as a result.
